What are Upvedas?

The Upvedas are Hindu Grants which are associated with the 4 Vedas. The word Upveda means "applied knowledge" and were used in traditional literature to designate the subjects of certain technical works. The list of these Upvedas, as per Caraṇavyuha are:- 

1) Ayurveda
The Ayurveda is applied with the Rigveda (the oldest Veda). It is associated with medicines. The word Ayurveda means "knowledge of life". The Ṛgveda refers to the cosmology known as Sāṁkhya which lies at the base of both Āyurveda and Yoga, contains verses on the nature of health and disease, pathogenesis and principles of treatment.

कायबालग्रहोर्ध्वाङ्गशल्यदंष्ट्राजरावृषान् ॥ 5 ।।
अष्टावङ्गानि तस्याहुश्चिकित्सा येषु संश्रिता ।
वायु: पित्तं कफश्चेति त्रयो दोषा: समासत: ॥ 6 ।।
विकृताऽविकृता देहं घ्नन्ति ते वर्त्तयन्ति च ।
– अष्टांगहृदयम् प्रथमोध्याय

kāyabālagrahordhvāṅga-śalyadamṣṭrājarāvṛṣān.
aṣṭāvaṅgāni tasyāhuścikitsā yeṣu samśritā.
Vāyuh pittan kaphaśceti trayo doṣāh samāsatah
vikṛtavikṛta deham ghnanti te varttayanti ca.
– Aṣṭāngahṛdayam, Adhyaya-1

According to the Āyurveda, the body is comprised of three primary forces, termed Doṣa i.e. (i) Vāyuh (ii) Pitta, and (iii) Kapha. The state of equilibrium between the doṣa is perceived as a state of health; the state of imbalance is a disease. Each Doṣa represents characteristics derived from the five elements of space, air, fire, water, and earth. Herbs are used to heal the diseases of the mind and body and to foster longevity.

2) Dhanurveda
The Dhanurveda is applied with the Yajurveda. It is associated with the art of self-defence, that is Archery. This Upveda had become super popular in Epics such as Ramayana and Mahabharat. Unfortunately, the oldest scriptures are not available. Books like Dhanurvidhi, Drauna Vidhya, etc. are the only ones that have been discovered by the Archaeological Survey of India 

3) Gāndharvaveda
The Gāndharvaveda is the science of Music, Art and architecture. It is applied with the Samveda. According to Sukra Niti, there are a large number of arts but 64 are considered to be more prominent. 

4) Arthaśāstra 
The Arthaśāstra is applied with Atharveda. It is related to the science of finance that is economics, political systems and social systems. The most prominent book on Arthaśāstra is Arthaśāstra by Chanakya.
